Bouzouki Lessons

I taught bouzouki for the first time in 1987 when my teacher was on a working trip to England. I had already been performing for two years and he saw it fit to leave his students in my care.

I have been teaching bouzouki since then and in 1994 after learning how to play the guitar and working as a guitar player for a brief period, I started teaching rhythm guitar.

In the last few years, I have developed a unique style of teaching the bouzouki, which combines the theory and harmony of music and practical elements of bouzouki playing with the skill of playing the rhythm guitar, in the teaching of the bouzouki.

I have also developed some excellent finger strengthening and agility exercises which if done methodically and consistently can ensure speed and accuracy after a short time of taking lessons. Ear training exercises are incorporated almost from the beginning to tune the ear with the instrument.

The Books We Use

I use Demetris Boukouvalas bouzouki method. There are two levels: the first one is Hitzaz and the second one is Ousak.

The latest edition comes with CDs: 4 CDs for each book. Each exercise is played on the CDs and this helps the student learn the exercise while training the ear as well. The student can play the exercise along with the CD checking if the exercise is being played correctly.

Most bouzouki players learn songs by ear; however, reading music helps the student of the bouzouki get familiar with the instrument.

Learning Songs

As we move along and start getting familiar with the instrument: the notes on the fret board, correct sitting position, correct technique of the left and right hand; and as we become comfortable with reading the notes from the music sheet and playing them on the bouzouki, we will start learning popular Greek songs. There are many music books with written music and as we progress we will start learning songs by ear.
